New projects of the National Energy Group were launched

Led by the National Energy Group Beijing Low-carbon Clean Energy Research Institute, the national key research and development plan “low carbon dioxide selective syngas direct conversion to long-chain α-olefin complete set technology” (α-olefin technology) project launch meeting was recently held in Beijing Future Science City, and will strive to form a long chain α-olefin production technology with an annual output of 100,000 tons during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period.

As a high-end chemical raw material, “long chain α-olefin” is the strategic core raw material of synthetic lubricating oil, plasticizer, high-end pipe, auto parts, pharmaceutical, and other industries. At present, the main commercial means of producing long-chain α-olefin in the world is through short-chain olefin polymerization, but this technology is monopolized by some European and American countries.

 

In the research and development of this strategic core raw material production means, we adopted a “new approach” — that is, direct conversion of coal syngas, through gasification technology to convert coal into syngas, and then through catalytic means to convert syngas into long chain α-olefin mixture, and purification.

 

Why take this technical route? Low-carbon Institute project leader told reporters, on the one hand, the technical route of short-chain olefin polymerization has been conquered and commercialized by some European and American countries, at this time to tackle the key has lost the first-mover advantage; On the other hand, through the conversion of coal synthesis gas, it conforms to the situation of abundant coal reserves in our country and simplifies the conversion step, which is expected to achieve cost reduction. “At present, there is no mature commercialization of this new technology internationally, which means we may be able to ‘change lanes’ through this technological route.” “The project manager said.

 

At present, the technology of producing long-chain α-olefin from coal syngas has obtained preliminary results in the laboratory. However, in order to realize the transformation of results, this technology needs to be put on a larger “stage” for verification. “In the next step, we will cooperate with chemical enterprises to gradually build 100-ton and 10,000-ton manufacturing equipment, and carry out further research and development until it can be commercialized.”

 

The reporter learned that the production of long chain α-olefin technology project is one of the first batches of key projects of the national key research and development plan “clean and efficient utilization of coal technology” during the “14th Five-Year Plan”, led by the Low carbon Institute, together with 10 domestic advantageous units composed of production, education, research, and use of the team cooperation. The project is expected to produce 100,000 tons of long-chain α-olefin production technology annually, which can not only realize the high-end, diversified, and low carbonization of clean transformation of Chinese coal but also has great significance to solve the problem of high dependence on long-chain α-olefin.
