China Petrochemical announced that the “West to East” hydrogen transmission pipeline demonstration project has been incorporated into the “National One Network of Oil and Natural Gas Construction Implementation Plan” on April 10, marking that our country has entered a new development stage of long-distance hydrogen transmission pipelines.
Starting from Ulanqab in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and ending at Yanshan Petrochemical in Beijing, the “West-East Hydrogen Transmission” pipeline, with a total length of more than 400 kilometers, is China’s first trans-provincial, large-scale, and long-distance pure hydrogen transmission pipeline. After the pipeline is built, it will be used to replace the existing hydrogen production and transportation of hydrogen from fossil energy in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, greatly alleviate the mismatch of green hydrogen supply and demand, and play a strategic demonstration role in the future cross-regional hydrogen transmission network construction to help our country’s energy transformation and upgrading.
The “West to East Hydrogen” pipeline is planned to pass through 9 counties in 3 provinces (cities) including Inner Mongolia, Hebei, and Beijing. The first phase of the pipeline has a capacity of 100,000 tons/year, with a long-term improvement potential of 500,000 tons/year reserved. At the same time, ports will be reserved along the route to facilitate access to potential hydrogen sources. In the future, Sinopec can rely on the construction of the branch line of the “West to East Hydrogen delivery” pipeline and the hydrogenation mother station to facilitate the efficient construction of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei hydrogen energy corridor and the realization of the “dual carbon” goal in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
Provide a demonstration solution for green hydrogen cross-province application in the western region. Green hydrogen, which is produced from renewable energy sources such as wind and light, is regarded as one of the most promising clean energy sources. Inner Mongolia scenery resources are rich, and the development of green hydrogen has advantaged advantages, but how to transport Inner Mongolia and even the western green hydrogen of our country to the eastern market demand exuberant area, has been the bottleneck problem restricting the development of green hydrogen industry.
At present, the long-tube trailer is still the mainstream way of long-distance hydrogen transport in China, but this way has high cost and low efficiency, which is also one of the main reasons for the high cost of terminal hydrogen, greatly restricting the development of the industrial chain. Hydrogen pipelines can deliver hydrogen on a large scale and over a long distance, and take into account the economy.
With the construction and production of the “West to East hydrogen transmission” pipeline, neighboring power generation enterprises can use “wind and light abandonment” to generate electricity to produce hydrogen and transport it out through pipelines, which constitutes an important component of hydrogen storage in the source network. Sinopec has built three hydrogen pipelines, with the longest operation time of about 16 years. It is reported that the demonstration project of the “West-East Hydrogen Transmission” hydrogen pipeline has made positive progress in route selection, technical research, and engineering construction plan. The preparation of the feasibility study report has been basically completed, and the work of the project is being accelerated.
